Default Intermittent but loud screeching above 80km/h

Hello,

'85 XJ6 Series III here, I've had a loud howl or screeching problem for a while now. I hit 80km/h and I get this loud howling.

If I take my foot off the accelerator it goes away, and oddly cornering at this speed stops it to the right but induces it to the left.

Revving it stationary, it's not there. At 100km/h it mostly goes away and on longer journeys it's generally not present either, but it's starting to carry into them now. In summer (Australian) it seems to disappear but always comes back for winter.

Sometimes it's gone for a few weeks after a service, perhaps it's diff lubrication? There's a bit of clunking too sometimes on acceleration, perhaps the gears are wearing out a bit too but it doesn't account for the screeching in my opinion.

Perhaps it's a loose wheel bearing or rattling brake pad? Any ideas?

I sort of accept most of the car's 'eccentricities', but I'm afraid this is insidious. She's my first car, I've had her for 8 years now and slowly the amount of problems are decreasing as I fix her up more and more. It's really just the howling, the duco (some rust too) and a missing bonnet bracer left to get her to her back to her prime.

P.S. the area where the lhs bonnet bracer attaches to the front body is rusted out and it looks like I can't get behind the body without having to remove a quarter of the engine bay. Any tips on straightening the bonnet or getting it nicely flush without the bracer?
