Interpreting tappet clearance measurememts
Jumped the starter to turn the engine (still trying to figure out a way to get on the crankshaft bolt), and completed the measurements.
using a low to moderate amount of pressure, all clearances seem to measure in the .012-.016 range, except for the ones on the front of the engine on both the intake and exhaust sides: 0.011 on intake, and 0.007(?!) on the exhaust side. Based on research, it sounds like I definitely should address the front clearances by replacing the shims. Are the .015 and .016 concerning, or not a big deal?
also, it looks like I need the camshaft alignment tool to make sure I get it in and out in position, so I’ll plan to order one of those…and of course I’m going to need to get to that tough crankshaft bolt….

While not concerning, do them all, do it right, repeat in 20 years.
Forget the crank bolt. LOOK at the water pump pulley snout, behind the fan clutch is a cast 22mm hex, now that is memory, maybe 24mm, but it there looking right at you.
Spanner on that, PUSH DOWN on the V Belt, and, good heavens, the engine rotates, EASY.
Spark plugs out, and a rag laid in the V, for accidents is always helpful.
You will also need the top chain adjusting tool, or mess around all day with pointy pliers, scunn knuckles, swear words a plenty, your call.

OK, I wandered into teh shed to find this spanner. I was NOT convinced of teh size, something rang bells in the brain, oh dear, that hurt.
It is 32MM. Big sucker, but there ya go, the mud is clearer.
