I have a 1978 XJC and am looking to upgrade the wheels.


I have found some 17 x 7.5 with an offset of +15, will these fit and what size tyres can I use that will not rub on the inner guards.

Wont be right. The Jag needs high offset wheel. My recollection is with a 7.5 inch when you'd need a ET in the high 30's for the center line of the wheel to be right.

 

I can get this wheel an any offset but just don't know if it will fit under the guards?

 

More precisely speaking...

OE wheel is 6.5 inches wide with an ET of 28.5mm.

If you run a 7.5 inch wheel with the same ET of 28.5 your wheel center line will be the same and your suspension geometry and handling will be correct.
Since the lip of the rim will widen by 1/2 of an inch get under the car while safely jacked and make sure you have at least 3/4 of an inch clearance. Tape a block of wood cut to 1/2 of an inch thick to the lip of the wheel, spin it and verify clearances.

Also verify the center bore of your new wheels will be sufficiently large.

With a set of modern 225 series tires you will have one great handling machines.
