Default Transmission noise when accelerating

1982 xj6 series 3 4.2

Lately I noticed my transmission makes sort of a grinding/screeching noise when I accelerate fast from a stop. Usually happens the loudest when its the first drive of the day. I just changed the fluid and its at the right level. It did help smooth out the shift but seems to want to make that noise when I accelerate fast from a stop. If I accelerate slow from a stop it doesn't seem to make any noises and shift fine. Any ideas?

Did you adjust the bands? Next step in the BW66 process.

The bands can be adjusted rather easy but it sounds like my tranny issues before and present. one of the clutches are gone and vibrating in the space it is suppose to be.
My last tranny was 1st gear as yours sounds. this tranny is second gear.
You can adjust the bands for forward like this. Pull the panel next to the gas pedal with the vent in it. Two screws and it slides forward, pull the carpet down and the pad and you will see an oval cover plate with 4 10mm bolts holding it on. take it off and look in there at the tranny. there is a square bolt head and a 19mm nut that locks the square head bolt in place. loosen the 19(it might be a 20)a few turns, then with an 8mm or 5/16 wrench tighten the square head bolt(everything says 60 inch pounds)down. At this stage I wouldn't be to concerned with how tight since your tranny's going, just think medium pressure. then back it off 3/4 of a turn and lock the 19 back on.
I did this multiple times and found that making it tighter(3/8-1/2 turn) helped the grinding slow down as I am waiting for the money to get a rebuild kit.
heres my two cents, It might only be worth 1/2 a cent but I have been dealing wiith this for the second time around and I hope this helps you in some way.

adjusting this way, bought me about two months or 2500 miles of time. Last tranny that did this was about two days. At least I had enough time to find parts and get them ordered this time.

I'm getting ready to adjust the bands on my '84. Did you adjust the rear band also? Issues I'm having is not upshifting from 2nd to 3rd very well when cold and some slipping at times.

No, I only adjusted the front bands, reverse was fine so I didn't do reverse band. When it was cold or rather the first couple miles in the mornings. It would be a tad bit tight and you could tell it was not letting go very easy but it freed up after a mile or so. My issue was between 1st and 2nd not 2nd and 3rd. another suggestion I'd make is, as it gets worse, I would floor the gas right before it usually starts and try and stall the shift untill it would be in the upper part of 3rd. Trying to bypass the soft shift. I noticed that the grinding was basically happening when there wasn't pressure on the plates. I don't know how much it will help you at that point when it's almost gone, but it's worth a try and might you some time like it did me. good luck and I will post on here, step by step instruction, the best I can on how to do the rebuild here in a few days.
