Default Light fault warning light

Is it normal for the yellow light fault light on the dash to light up when you first turn on the lights? I've been running laps around the car looking for one of the lights not to be on and all of them are on. The dash light will go out after a few miles down the road...

Not normal. You may have a bulb that is about to go out. The sensor picks up differneces in voltage draw, so the end is near for one of them.

Perfectly normal. The bulb failure sensors have a bi-metal switch that is closed when cold. It take a few moments of current running through them before they heat up enough to "go open" ...and then warning light goes out. Then, if a bulb fails, current is reduced, the switch coold down and closes...and the warning light come back on !

if it is a Series 3 XJ-6, (up to 1987) I tend to agree with Ken. The light should go off in about 20 seconds after turning the lights on, according to the Owner's Handbook, not stay on for a couple of miles.

I wasn't being very clear. Normal for the warning light to come on when the lights are turned on. Not normal for it to stay on for a couple miles.

if the light does go out after a few miles,it sounds more like a bad Bulb Sensor, instead of a bad bulb.

I understand these Sensors have an adjustment screw, although I have neveradjustedmine, the light always goes out after 20 seconds.

But we don't know what year or model car he owns, do we?

I assumed a Ser III given the forum that the question was posted in (?). I don't think the ser I or II cars had bulb failure warnings...did they?
