Default looking for opinions on tires

ok, so what ya running and are ya happy with em???

Over the years i have run several diff tires on the jag, all 215 70 r 15,
when i got her she had pirellis on and ride ride was horrific! i replaced those with coopers( no idea what ones, but they looked swollen and gave car an amazing ride and cornering) then there were some generic brands that got put on here and there when a tire issue cropped up and i was out on the road, anyways, today i was going through car for my weekend road trip, (see "i love my wife" thread and found spare tire was flat, aired her up and she was full of cracks!, its the original spare that came with car 11 years ago, always just used it to get home and had other repaired.

So off to tire shop and now my spare is a goodyear!!! thinking i want to do all four of the same brand again at some point.

So what ya got people??

I've had much nicer rides with Dunlop, Toyo and Continental than I ever had with Pirelli. Many will disagree with me, but IMHO Pirelli and Michelin are overrated and overpriced. My pick overall is Toyo eco, great tyres if you don't have a hang up about the brand name on your sidewalls!

Running Yokohama Avid Touring/S'. Ride, durability, feel, and price are the reasons. They also look good and fill out the wheel well nicely.

On another car that I tend drive a lot harder than the Jag, I have Pirellis. Ive found them to be very quiet compared to the previous tyres and very good in the wet.

The Jag has Sumitomos , only because they make a whitewall and the style consultant/wife says it wouldnt look right without whitewalls. They are a good overall tyre and plenty good enough for how that car is driven.

I dont care that much about ride characteristics (I doubt there is a commonly agreed definition apart from how it feels in the seat of your pants) I can feel the diff between commercial tyres and passenger tyres. Differences between passenger tyres beyond grip and noise are beyond my sensory abilities.

I always look for "Round, Black, preferrably with some tread visible", then I read further, DUH.

Over the years I have run:

Yokohama, Yuk
Pirelli's, OK, but $$ here are stupid.
Michelin, thumpy.
XJ-S Goodyear, GOOD.
Daimler, Bridgestone, GOOD.
XJ40, NO name, Good, Quiet, lasted the teenage daughters punishment better than I thought they would.
X300, some Chinese brand, yep I got conned, awful, noisy, sounded like diff bearings dry, bugga. Replaced with Bridgestone, silent.
Silver S Type, BF Goodrich, happy enough, came with the car.
Black S Type, had Pirelli, YUK, now Bridgestone, sweet.

All complied with my initial observation I typed above.

I couldn't agree more Grant.
15 months ago I put a pair of "light commercial" 205-70R 15 Sailun Terramax 96H CVR's on the rear of my car. ($122 each). They have now done 10,000 miles and I am more than happy with them(all weather).

The car has done three track days on them so far and the rear has never let go more than expected. So for everyday driving conditions they hold up.

The Michy's on the front are almost past "use by" condition so after the next track day in two weeks I am going to put a pair on the front too.

Well, it took a while, until I got 'real"!


1. My Jeep did not need gnarly off road tires. that driving habit thing.
It got a set of Yokohama touring tires. Just fine, and price much easier on my pocket book.


2. My Jaguar doesn't need V rated tires. Sustained 125 mph, not likely. T rated B.F. Goodrich 215 x 70 x 15 on 7" XJS sourced lattice
wheels suit me just fine. Got a really good price as well.


My spare is more than ancient. Hard as a rock. Holds air, tread not bad. almost fits spare well. On an original Kent. Sumitomo, I think.


My son got a "deal" on some Chinese tires for his big Dodge Cummins powered 4x4. Ugh, not really round!!! Gnarly looking, though!!!

To each his own. The last car that I have ever had
that looked right with white walls was my 69 Cordoba.


Everything after, black walls seem right.

215/60/15 Michelins came on the car and I loved them, ride and handling was Amazing! Not only that, they make it sit low to the ground, giving it the look of a crouching cat ready to pounce.

After I blew one on the second half of the S-curve (I was only doing 70mph), husband got me some General Altimax (automotive equivalent to sneakers, Very quiet) with stiffer side walls to deal with my addiction to cornering Gs; handling and ride quality deteriorated noticeably because stiffer sidewalls give less and make her sit higher.

I'm doing my best to wear them out so I can have Michelins again.

in BLACK, because white walls look Really Stupid on a black car. They would detract from the chrome wheels.

Can't comment much for an XJ6, but my other cars have had dunlop tires and they've been my favourite of all. Smooth ride, wears slowly and evenly. =]

In 54, I had acquired a wife, or a wife acquired me. nature took it's
course right away. child on the way.


53 MGTD no longer "convenient". Still in service, went shopping,
Northern Germany. Expected a MBZ of some type. Naah,
a Belgian assembled 50 Chevrolet four door. Black. In great shape.
Made a deal. Well, after some adventures with worn out tires, it got
a set of "narrow" white walls to replace the black walls. Great look.
Music, tunes, happy wife, etc.....' Much easier for her to enter in her
"condition".


Brought the car home. Sold for a very nice price as my new job had a furnished company car!!!!


Some cars look right in WSW, others not so much. Not to mention
the trend thing....


The 41 pink Cadillac convertible I bought at a lien sale looked right
in U. S. Royal Masters. A premium wide white wall....
Wifey, just getting the hang of driving loved it.


Big flathead V8 and four speed Hydromatic helped. No clutch to fool with. Took some muscle, no PS or PB, but, she a big strong gal did just fine, sorta. Good thing we lived in a very small town and lots of wide open country roads available....

Added thoughts. Jaguar recommended tire inflation pressures were for
the original wheels and tires of the times. Two choices?
And, the roads of the day.


But, today, why not mess with front to rear bias and pressures????
