Loose door mirror glass

Loose door mirror glass
Hi - my first post on this forum, although I have been reading in the 3 years since I bought my XJ6.
The problem is the door mirror glass which has come loose. The electric motors will move it up and down but left to right is loose. The glass just flops left to right although I can hear the motor whirring.
The question is how to remove the glass to investigate and put it back securely.
Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

hi,
the mirror is glued to a plastic base which snaps into ball pivots. Obviously it came off one of the pivots, unless the pivot arm broke.
try finding the side that is loose and then getting it to snap back into the ball pivot. You can manually push it to one side or the other.
to remove the glass from the plastic base, is always a disaster, usually the mirror will crack since it is glued to a very difficult to remove fabric tape. You can try to pry it off with a very thin flexible spatula. Also you can try heating it with a hair dryer before trying to pry it.

Breaking the glass is not a disaster.
Unfortunately, I lost the refence to a source for mirror assemblies and glass. I used then twice. One. glass alone for my Jeep. It came with the adhesive. I glued the new mirror on to the cracked mirror on the passenger side. it fit perfectly and is just fine.
Two. The glass fell out of the stalk on my daughter's Passat. Not unusual, so we learned!! Another glass. Same adhesive. I glued it in.
In both cases , I used masking tape to secure the glass til the adhesive "settled".
Success in each instance.
Google, it is amazing...
