Question Lowering xj40

I've only had my 1987 XJ40 XJ6 Jag for a couple of week now and want to start customizing it. One thing that i've noticed is that not many people have been lowering these cars. Whilst searching around endlessly I cannot seem to find lowering springs anywhere. I really would like my jag to be a but different to others with a lower wider 'stance' that will almost seem hot rod/cruiser influenced.

So really my question is, Have people lowered these car? Is it hard? How did they lower it?

Cheers guys,

Default Incorrect forumn but...there are not many options....

There are not many options outside of custom springs or cutting the springs you have. I don't recommend because cutting and custom springs will be difficult for a enthusiast to get right. These cars are already kind-a-low to begin with. You may be able to get the look your after with bigger wheels and tires. Larger diameter wheels and tires give subtle a lowered look and fill out the fenders a bit more which creates a contemporary sculpted look. Do some test fits with some larger wheel and taller tires and you will see what I'm talking about. The jag has a chevy bolt pattern so you've got lots of wheel options.

Ok.. well I know that there are many companies that make springs for other model jags around this time period. Are the springs interchangeable with other Jaguars?

Junk yard a couple sets of springs & start experementing.

When modifying springs, understand that you might be stepping into a project & might have to modify things, other than the springs themselves.

When cutting springs, try to generate as LITTLE HEAT AS POSSIBLE!!!

Even a slight ammount of heat will change the spring's temper.

i took the plastic spacers out dropped it about an inch.

for the front some guys add steel spacers between the a-arms and spring seat, i'm guessin a 1/2" spacer would drop it more than a 1/2, becareful.

use new grade 8 bolts and lock nuts.

I used 12mil spacers between my a arms and spring seat on my xjs and my series 1 this lowered the front by 20 mil and had rear springs made to suit. XJ40 should be similar to do.

Cheers Ray
