Manual Conversion
I have just purchased a restored 1971 XJ6 series 1, originally a manual but currently has an auto box in it. I'd like to convert it back, does anyone have advise as to what quality contemlorary gearboxes are a good fit for this car?

There are a few companies that make modern 5 speed boxes to suit the XK motor, usually for the E-types, and MK2 era, but they are all basically the same motor.
There was someone on here who turbocharged his business's XJ6, and they made an adapter to fit up a modern nissan gearbox.
If I was converting the car to manual again, i'd look at a modern gearbox, much nicer to use, stronger, quieter, smoother etc

On another forum, I read of an XJ6 with a "home built" conversion.
used a lot of Mustang influence and a T5 as I recall. The BW
autobox bell housing was modified to accept the manual box
with an adapter welded on. h never could Id the flywheel.
it suffered bashed teeth. At last, he found a machinist able to remove the ring gear and shrink on an appropriate one.
I'd be leary of a used ancient tech box and gear. Even if overhauled. that work can mean a lot of work or a minimum. Clean, inspect, reseal and paint? or gears, bushings synchro, etc. Wanna bet that old box has tired synchro's and some nicked or worse teeth??
I was wounded that way a couple of decades ago. I bought a 39 Ford
"Three on the floor" for my "Hot Rod "Project". Yukko, teeth knocked off the cluster!!! but, the seller was a gentleman and sent me a healthy cluster forthwith.
It was to replace the three on the tree that came with an engine purchase.
A barn stored car due for "rectification". "Was running fine when we put it away".
Sorta true. Engine ran, a bit poorly, but I fixed that, in the "warm up".
Nuts, another cluster with shucked teeth. Snap shifting those old boxes did that.
guilty as charged, over and over....
Caveat on old stuff, even if "overhauled".

Is the gearbox the 4 speed plus overdrive or the 5 speed as fitted to later jags and series 3?
I picked up a kit from a series 3 and plan to do the same. I'm going to put it in first and see if there's any problems and if there are then get it refurbished.
