Manual gearbox will not reverse
*Solved*
Seems I need to push a bit hard to left, while engine is idling...
Hi all,
This is my first day owning my S1 manual transmission. Pardon me for this basic question!
When i tried to engage reverse gear, it won't let me engage.
Manual book says i have to push the lever against spring pressure and pull to reverse position.
Seems I can't push it to the left or push down.
Is there any locking mechanism i need to "touch"?

Hardi - it has been a long time since I drove a Jag of your vintage with a manual box. But I seem to remember anyone else who drove my 1970 E type also had problems getting reverse. As I recall, my method was to take a running swipe to the left with my hand, and it would enter the gate then pull back. So try that, and also ensure your clutch is properly disengaging - pump it if need be.

Never did drive this version of a stick shift. And, the last was a very old one. 39 Ford.
Reverse has no synchros to assist the shift.
To the contrary, it is designed to make it a bit tricky to shift in to reverse, and as such prevent inopportune thigs from taking place. Could be considered a sort of safety lock out.. .
Glad you mastered it. Enjoy the critter..
