Default Mystery Wire?

I went to pull out the light switch knob to test the fog lamps on my SIII XJ6, but when I did, I heard a crack and the whole bezel moved forward with the knob.

I thought maybe it was loose but then I realized the bolts that hold it in place were still in the dash and what had happened was the parts of the plastic bezel that captured the bolts had cracked and now the whole bezel was loose.

The light switch still worked but what concerned me more was the presence of a loose black wire that was behind the light switch that now revealed itself with the light switch out of the way.

Anyone know what that black wire (shown in the upper part of the pic) might have been connected to?

That looks to me like the fibre optic light source. If so it just pushes into the unit somewhere. Possibly into the slotted upright plastic bit on the unit below it.

yea, that black wire is a fibre optic light for the switch fascia.

you could remove all the broken parts and reweld them with epoxy.

Ah! That makes complete sense. I thought it was electrical but I should have tested it in the dark to see it glow. Thanks everyone!
