Default Is this the neutral safety switch? 82 XJ6 Aut.

The car won't start unless i bypass the neutral safety switch at the relais. Upon looking and disassembling the shifter, i realised it isn't located at the shifter, so i figured it must me at the gearbox itself. I found this switch aside the shifter linkage. Is this the neutral safety switch?

I think you could drill out the rivets and fix it, with care.

There is a small bit of wiggle room to move the position of the switch little, to get it to work properly.

It's not apparent, but it's there. I once thought the switch was faulty, but a small adjustment cured it.

There are two versions of the switch. The difference is in the hole for the hold-down bolt. Later versions had an elongated hole which allows the switch to rotate for adjustment. Earlier ones didn't. A TSB mentions enlarging the hole to allow adjustment.

1. It also serves to light up the back up lamps.

2. I would be surprised if a new one is availabl.
