New fuel tanks
Morning,
I changed my fuel tanks and ran into a problem with the plastic covers that sit in the rear quarter panels. BD. 48342 They cover the drain screw for the tanks
Has anyone come across a way to replicate these?

thank you Larry, that is my website for XJ-6 mods and tips.
I have the hole plugs that fit from the OUTSIDE of the panel and are removable when needed in the future. The factory plugs are a one-time fit, once you push them aside to drain the tanks, they cannot be reset in place unless you remove the entire quarter panel, which is a p.i.t.a. to remove and to reinstall.

When I did a load of panel work at the rear of my old XJ6, (new boot floor, rear valance, and 1/4 panels), I left off the access covers to the drain plugs off. I couldn't see the point of them, because anybody wanting to steal fuel will soon rip those covers off. However, nowadays I don't suppose any modern day thieves even know there are drain plugs there.
insects, small reptiles and rodents make nests inside those quarter panels, rodents like to chew wires. Water and dirt gets in during driving, forming crud at the lowest point, clogging the small drain hole and eventually rotting the panel if not the bottom of the tanks.
Same thing happens in the spare tire compartment with the two vent holes. I have mine plugged but with small vent holes per plug.

Access drain hole in tank panel with no plug?
It is also a great dirt/mud trap which will certainly assist the rust cancer in the tank cover panel.
Many years ago, I had a S2V12, and the tank cover panels were rotted out due no plugs.
I was able to get a couple off wrecks and ended up using alloy tape to cover the access hole.
There were no replacement plugs available like Jose is now selling.

yes Bill exactly, a mud trap, Also the neoprene seal starts to deteriorate when the hole is left open,
I always thought the factory could have done a better job with removable plugs instead of a piece of foam rubber to keep the plug pressed in place between the quarter panel and the drain bolt !
That's how I found mine were the first time I drained the tanks. Unbelievable.
