Default Newly Acquired SIII

Hey everyone, I haven't been on the forum for a bit, finally got a nice job which takes up a ton of time and a 3 month old which, well, takes my remaining time. My '73 xj6 is still being a pain in the ***, but it runs, so what more can you ask for. I got word from friend that someone was looking to get rid of an '84 Vanden Plas for scrap prices ($300 around here), so I said I was interested. Well, long story short, I offered $500 for it and it's mine. It doesn't run and they think it's the fuel pump. I will start diagnosing it this coming week but it looks to be in great shape (minus some surface rust which hasn't compromised any structure). The last thing I need is more projects, but I couldn't pass it up. All I need now is a SII and my XJ6 collection will be sort of complete (I should start tracking down some of those more rare versions, but I'm sure they aren't going for cheap).

Looks good apart from the dead sheep on the front seats.

Worst case you could make the money back in used parts on Ebay right!

Great price, the body and interior would have been enough for me to buy it!
Nice buy, and it will be a nice ride when running.

Those seat covers are pretty ugly. I am hoping the seats are in great shape underneath. I figured if the car is unfixable (some serious problem not worth the time or money fixing) then I can make the seats work on my '73, since the ones in there are rotting pretty bad. I could part out the rest and recoup my money, but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. I'm pretty excited about it and hopefully all goes well. I paid $700 for my '73 and all it was was clogged fuel filter, dirty tanks, and clogged carbs. I really home this is similar issues, easy to diagnose and fix.

I'm not sure how long it has sat, but I think it has only been a few years. I seem to have luck getting old motors to start again (though now that I say this I wont have such luck with this). Luckily with this being a Series III, as opposed to my Series I, I can find plenty more information online and this forum is full of great experience so I will have her running in no time! I hope.

It looks pretty decent to me.

I think that you should wash and reuse the seat covers, you don't see many like that around the place.

Funny but I was having another look at a S1 2.8 Man + OD in a barn this afternoon.

Any pics of the Rambler and the Coronet?

I bet you'll get her roaring soon, it had been a few years since my S-III had ran when I bought it, but those engines don't like to quit! keep us updated!

It might be the fuel pump., but it most likely is the selector switch or valve.
Easy way to test is squirt some starter fluid into the air cleaner and try to get it to pop off. if it runs even for a second you’ve confirmed it’s an easy fix.
If the fuel pump is working, you should hear it. No sound, fuel pump time.
If not take the hose off the selector valve and put it in a portable gas can.
If it runs it’s either the selector switch or valve body itself. Those aren’t available last I looked. So take it apart and buy a smallish ultrasound cleaner ( EBay ) clean all the parts, reassemble and feeding 12 volts make sure it’s working. Properly. Still no luck?
Time for a new switch.
Again likely not available new. Try the various Jaguar wrecking yards.
