Default Question about the speedo drive in an overdrive unit

I am going through the transmission on my Panther which uses a 1974 XJ6 S2 Type A Laycock overdrive. I removed the brass "bushing" (part 10866 in the parts book) and took off the external o-ring that seals it to the tailshaft housing. Looking inside I saw what looked like another o-ring about halfway down the bore which seals the shaft of the drive gear itself. I went in with a hooked o-ring tool and lo and behold it's a lip seal! A tiny lip seal complete with garter spring. They must have installed it with some arcane magic because it is placed inside a bored o-ring gland and I cannot fathom how they did it.

Long story short, I butchered it trying to remove it while I still thought it was a simple o-ring. It does not show up in any parts book images. I'm actually going to have to go in with a small boring tool on my lathe to get the remainder of the pieces out. I'm hoping the dimensions will be that of a standard o-ring gland and I plan to use one to replace it.

Any experience in this area? Or am I screwed and need to buy a new assembly, which presumably has the lip seal already installed ($112 From SNG).

Ken
