Default rear brake calliper

Hallo from Harderwijk (Netherlands),

My rear brake callipers have to be removed. I removed the rear axle as a whole. I have removed the handbrake levers. The left calliper could be removed but the right one can't. I can remove the upper bolt that fixes the right calliper to the differential. But the lower bolt can't be taken out, there is not enough space. What am I doing wrong?

Thankls for your reply. There is a misunderstaning however: I did manage to losen the bolt but there is not enough space to get it out altogether.

I had to shorten a 1/4in socket by cutting as much as I could from it on both ends so it could just about grip the bolt and the ratchet drive. Then I turned the bolt thru the hole in the disc. Took ages, refit was easier. Use plenty of wd40! Hope this helps, if you want any clarity feel free to ask more. JJ.

@Panhard

We just did this on our 76 XJ12C a few days ago.

The bolt won't come all the way out, but when you rotate the caliper and pull the caliper out, the bolt comes out with it. Putting the caliper back on you just put the bolt back through the hole in the caliper then offer the caliper up to the diff and find the hole there.

Than you for your reply Sarc.

I understand what you mean and with the other calliper the procedure you discribe was succesfull. But with the right calliper it isn't. I read somewhere that the holes in the subframe of Series I are smaller than on the Series II and III.

Oh :-(

Attached a pic of the front of the Series 2 cage. Once the handbrake mechanism is taken out, the caliper comes out the front easily, even with the bolts still in it.......... Why is the bolt not letting you take the caliper out ? How close is it to the diff ? (I can't mentally picture where you are getting it stuck)

Is it possible to rotate the caliper around the disc to another place in the cage and take it out that way ? Like could you rotate the caliper all the way over the top to the other side, then pull it out there ?
