Default Recently purchased Series III small update

Bought this '87 Series III XJ6 a couple months ago. Haven't had much time to spend on it recently. I did manage to get the 7" headlights and Nardi wheel installed. But that's not what has made me happiest.

Check out the wheels. After a long, long time searching I finally found a full set of steel wheels, hubcaps, and unique lugnuts. I've always thought these were handsome. I know that alloy wheels are more popular along with upgrades to 16" or 17" . But....it's fun sometimes to take the road less travelled. Plus, since this car is a somewhat unexciting color, the shiny wheel covers add bit of flash.

Cheers
DD

For a steel wheel those look unique, like alloy. They do add a little bling to the body color. In another life, where I'm younger and have more money, I would like to put rims and tires on mine that are a size or two bigger. It would be for looks only as the tires I have now keep the car off the ground.

Well done Doug,

Doug, I'm baffled, what wheels are those? They do look like alloy, but they don't look like my ser2 steelies. What car are they from?
Bill
Btw, those are the perfect wheels for that car!

And what, may I ask, is the winged creature beside the ford PU, in your incredibly big awesome shop building?

Those are the standard equipment Series III wheels with wheel covers. Commonly seen on early Series III cars but after ‘81 or so most cars had the alloy wheels.

Ferrari F355 Challenge. A 385hp go kart and absolute gas to drive! Not mine but a car that I look after. The truck is mine… but not quite so much fun😁

I had those wheels and covers on my 1980 XJ6, and they do look very nice, but they're a PITA when it comes to wheel alignment if the equipment in use demands the equipment has fittings that mount on the wheels, and which must be in contact with the rims.

I sold a set of those hubcaps to a guy in Australia years ago. Polished stainless steel, predecessors to the Kent alloy wheels.
It was a time when shipping parts to Australia from US was affordable. Not anymore.

As it happens the wheel covers were easy to find. ‘Twas the wheels and unique lugnuts that took 2-3 years of on/off searching.

Anyhow, the stainless polishes up very easily and the black sections are easily repainted. Satisfying little project.

PITA, yes…although a minor one in the grand scheme of things. When alignment time comes my plan is to just remove them ahead of time.

That's the Horseshoe Pass in North Wales, by the way. Not far from the Mach Loop where you can find US fighter jets practising their low level manouvers.

My sincere apologies. Now that I look closer, she is very feminine looking. My Bad!

The Ponderosa Cafe at the top is now closed, unfortunately.

Doug,
I'm glad I saved your thread.
I have been looking for a set of rims that are wider than my stock 15x6's. A number of years ago, my Daughter and I stumbled upon an S3 tucked back in the woods with a whole bunch of Subaru's (100+). It's in rebuildable condition, but I forgot about it until yesterday. I drove up to take another took today and see what it had for wheels. It's a V12 Van de Plaz (sic) with the same wheels you put on your new acquisition. They are steel with a stainless "beauty ring" and kind of a hub-cap and exposed lugs. Would this style wheel on this high-end model likely be 6.5" wide? If you don't think it's a lead-pipe cinch, I won't waste my time and effort to call the owner and dicker.

I'm not aware of any Series I-II-III car being factory fitted with anything except 15x6 wheels. The steel wheels, the Kent alloy, the Ogle Pepperpot alloy....all 15x6.

Cheers

The one possible exception might be an Ogle perforated wheel that was fitted to "High Security" vehicles (whatever that means). It was listed as fitted to the very late V12 cars that were classed as high security. I have no data on it to know if it actually was wider or not. Part number is CCC3971.
