Default Replacing Automatic Clutch - 1985 XJ6 VDP

Hi Seniors,
I have burnt automatic transmission clutches and need to replace them.
Is it something I can do myself or need transmission expert to handle it for me.

Please help

Burnt clutches means time for a full rebuild Mike. Personally, I leave the auto trans stuff to the experts. Too bad Johns Cars is no longer, I'd highly recommend a 700r4 conversion.

You mean, aside replacing the clutch plates there are other parts to be replaced for the transmission to function well?

Usually, yes. Burnt and slipping clutches mean there has been a lot of heat generated and that affects other things. Most likely all the clutches are bad, as will be the bands. Then you need to look at the condition of the drums the band rides on. I suspect the bushings are probably worn as well. Any seals in servos and pistons will be affected by the heat too and should be replaced.

You have to take the transmission entirely apart to replace the clutches, so you might as well do a full rebuild while you are in there.

The transmission has initially been apart by a transmission expert who confirmed is only the forward clutch that was affected since the car was was not moving forward which made me call for his service but now he's reluctant to come and fix the clutch plates after I ordered them in.
That's the reason I asked if I could fix them back by myself

Is the fluid level correct? Was it checked with the transmission hot, engine running and in park? Low fluid can cause a no drive situation. Another cause is if the filter isn't sealing to the body and the pump is sucking air instead of fluid you'll have a no drive.

If you have a manual, are patient and methodical, and most importantly your workshop is very clean you can probably do the repair yourself. It depends on your mechanical abilities. Also the clutch clearances in the drum are very important, make sure those are within the specified range. If you have to, err on the side of slightly loose, rather than tight.

How many clutch plates are piled in there?
I imported 10pcs of the clutch plates and when the transmission guy finished the installation, there was one plate left
