Road Hazard!
Wow Elnr, I don't know where you find the resolve and strength to keep on going, with a string of bad luck events. You inspire all of us to not give up easily. Hope the alignment check goes well.
1) I only have the car because I answered "Yes" to his question, "Do you like it?" He wants to have it on the road as much as I do, maybe even more. If I didn't keep on, it would show a lack of appreciation for his gift. And I still do like the car! I like how it drives. I like how it looks. I like how I look in it. I like how it makes me feel.
2) It didn't start out as such a big project in our minds, but a series of small ones, easily conquered, or so we thought. It's just that the further we went, the worse it got, and everything we touched bred 14 other sub projects, each more serious than the last, and having gone that far we felt we had to press on. I think that's called Project Creep.
3) Each of us is more stubborn as the other when it comes to things like this. When I get fed up to the point of wanting to put a bomb in the gas tank he dissuades with some obtuse point of logic. When he get to the same place I list all our success as posted in various threads on here. Fortunately, (or not, depending on your outlook) we haven't both got in the Pit of Despair at the same time. By now we're into this car so deep we simply can't afford to quit. And besides, it's become sort of a challenge.
4) I got the car as a driver not a garage queen. Things happen to any driver, it's only expected; no car is immune just because it's a pretty classic. Further assessment does show, however, that this latest mishap is mostly cosmetic, and although it looks Really bad, consequential damages have been minimal compared to what could have been. There's so much plastic on Wart (2002 Ford Windstar) that he would have been totaled if I had hit that beam with him. He's not much to look at, but he does still pass SMOG by a healthy margin.
Given all the above, I'll continue driving Nix and we'll continue fixing stuff that breaks until something goes wrong that simply can't be repaired. At that point I'll consider I've driven her wheels off and add her license plate to my collection of cars I've used up.
Thank you for the well wishes.

The definition expressed in your last paragraph approaches infinity.
When the DOHC in my car blew in 2001, I thought it was over.
it took years of impasse before It got on then road again and passed SMOG. The efforts to do it.
Tons of bucks donated along the way.
It is going to be around here for the foreseeable future. Mebbe even after I've gone on....
