Default Series 1 electric windows

Gentlemen,

I have embarked on what I would call a massive "character building" exercise. Refurbishing the power windows on my Series !.
This involved lubricating/checking the mechanical arms and renewing the Bailey channels in the window frames.

I have overhauled the 4 motors. Two front ones work OK. The rear ones seem rather weak to the extent they would struggle to "pull the skin of a rice pudding" as the saying goes. Overhaul involved new brushes, which had all worn down "to the gums" and clean up of the commutators. I think the 2 weak motors have lost their "gauss" if that's the correct electrical speak.

The later series 2 motors seem much more powerful, and I have 4 of 'em at my disposal. But, the wiring is different. The S1 motors have 3 wires, the Series 2 just 2 (+ve and -ve).

Rather than convert the whole wiring harness for the windows circuits, which would mean using the later plastic switches (I rather keep the original chrome ones), I am wondering if anyone on the forum has done an easy conversion using the later motors ie adapted the existing S1 circuit to the later S2 motors?

Any advice, ridicule or sympathy gratefully accepted!

I have an S3 and the motors have two wires, sounds the same as the S2. The switches just reverse the polarity to the motors when pressed up or down. If you put a meter or test light on your circuit between switch and motor (there should be a wire connection behind the kick panel or in the door) and see if any two of your three wires gives a polarity reversal with switch position, the S2 motors should work using those two wires. I have no experience or idea what your third wire is for, does it go all the way back to the switch or maybe a motor housing ground?

Someone much more experienced than I will chime in.

Dave

Thanks Dave,Yes, the 3rd wire goes back to the master switches on the console to supply 12v to the door switches on each side. Plus there's a further black wire (ground) that connects to the body of each motor.

Seems the current can be reversed thru the motors using a SPDT (single pole, dual throw) relay, but I haven't quite figured out how to wire it in as yet.

I knew I should have paid more attention to physics & electronics at school!

We are probably above my pay grade already Peter, but when I was going to improve my window system I found this website that explained a process that could be used with an S3 car.

I'm still a little fuzzy on your 3rd wire routing. "3rd wire goes back to the master switches (individual lift switches!?) on the console to supply 12v (the motor is supplying 12v to the lift switches?) to the door switches on each side (do you have switches on your doors as well as the console?)".

Take a look at this link and there might be something there that looks interesting.

Peter, if you don't get anywhere with this, I will pull the motors from the back doors of my series 1 V12 body and you could try them.

Thanks again Dave. Yes, there are switches on the doors as well as the console.

No doubt the console switches can over-ride the door switches in case your pesky grandchildren get carried away in the back seats!!!

Looks like I'll need 2 x relays for each motor, according to the experts on You Tube.

I'll check out that link. Thanks again.

Hi John, thank you for your kind offer.
