Series 3 fuel tanks
Thought you all might like to know this London-based parts dealer recently advertised new fuel tanks for Series 3 cars, LH and RH. Price £217
CAC55221, CAC55231
BTW I have today at last found my copy of "Jaguar XJ - The Complete Companion" 1991, by Nigel Thorley. This contains a lot of information on these saloons, especially for Series 3 cars. I for one, didn't know that the last XJ6 Series 3 left Browns Lane in May 1987. This was the last car with the XK engine of 1947. 40 years of production !!

new replacement tanks are also available in the USA.
yes but the Series 3 body continued being produced until 1992 with the V12 engine. It was the 6 cylinder XK engine that was discontinued in 1987. Most of those V12 Series 3 went to Canada, only a few came to the USA.

The Series 3 shell was indeed produced up to 1992, and I have seen them being made at the Castle Bromwich body works in Birmingham around 1988. Only around 50 a week were made in a small shop, no robots here ! It was fascinating to see the body lead being applied to cover joins and make a line. The chaps doing this were all grey-haired, and will all be retired (or dead !) now. I also saw the automated paint line too for the XJ40s. This was appli3d using an electric field, and it was uncanny to see the paint attracted to the body shells. The paint was not sprayed but flung off painting discs spinning at high speed, then a couple of guys with spray guns filled in any missing places.
If it's any comfort, Fraser, you're not alone :-). Many Jag enthusiasts (and a few so-called Jaguar experts) fail to recognize this fact. And many parts suppliers as well.
Cheers
