Default Series 3 manual

My new '87 XJ6 should be arriving in two days. I have a Haynes manual but the covered years are '68-'86. Will this apply to '87 as well? I can't seem to find a manual for '87 that doesn't have an XJ40 on the cover. Thank you.......Jack.

Yes.

86 and 87 are 98% identical

Haynes isn't the greatest manual for these cars but it'll cover the basics

Common problem. Both the Series III XJ6 and the "XJ40" XJ6 were simultaneously in production for a period of time in 1987. Confusion ensues.

Cheers

And then there’s the added muddling of the Series III V12’s staying in production until 1992 although they were not sold in the US after 1987.

This has resulted in some interesting conversations about my cars not actually existing.

Thank you Doug. What manual would you recommend? I have seen the 4 volume official workshop manuals available on eBay but $200 is a bit pricey for me. Short of pulling an engine I'll try and fix any problems myself.

Well, actually, the Series III V12 was not sold in the US at all. The US CAFE regulations made it impossible for Jaguar to meet the fuel economy goals if the V12 was part of the mix. Nevertheless, 6 of the XJ12 models for 1980 were sold before the decision was made. The XJ12 was virtually identical in every way to the XJ6 except for the engine/transmission. The XJ12 went out of production after 1981, replaced by the Sovereign V12 (and the Daimler Double Six). The use of the short form “XJ12” designation for all and any V12 saloon is incorrect but insurance companies and registration offices continue to use it.

There are a number of the much more luxurious Series III V12 Vanden Plas cars in the US, but they were all imported from Canada.

Google "AKM9006 Jaguar" for a good manual. Seek out Edition 5 if possible. Also Google "RTC9885CF Jaguar" for the parts catalog which is very useful. It covers thru 1985 but most of it is the same for your 1987 car. There is a later printed edition but it is very rare.

Also...very important....the S57 wiring guide. Search the archives for a download link or PM me and I'll send it to you

Well, it gets the idea across easily: a 12 cylinder sedan versus 6 cylinder.

Thank you again, Doug. My car arrived last night, I've posted a few pics and description elsewhere. There is a fold out electrical chart in my glove box, AKM9062. I'll be looking for the manual and part catalog you suggested...........Jack.
