Series 3 v12 pre he fuel pump question
Hi folks, hope you're well.
I've been working my way through various issues - learning a lot along the way (thanks Grants Francis).
I've got a question about the fuel pump in my car (1979 series 3 DD6).
When i turn the key to run (engine off) the fuel pump will run indefinitely. I've read that it should stop after about two seconds. Is this correct?
if so, what would make the fuel pump keep running?
For what it's worth, the car starts and runs beautifully.
Thanks in advance.
Roger

Roger,
Yes the 2 seconds is the correct spec.
Not seen it on a peHE before, but the fuel pump relay is earthed via the ECU, where the timer circuit is living.
The HE has timer issues, so the Orange wire, pin #85 of the pump relay, is often earthed, thus giving what you now have.
No real danger, to a point, just that as long as the Ign is ON that pump runs.
The Inertia cut off will still kill it in a bad enough prang, its just the engine stall and continued running scenario that could cause grief.
I doubt the ECU is the issue, probably someone earthed that relay to compensate for all the issues that were there when 1st in your care.
I reckon that it will still be an Orange wire, but I might be wrong.

You're right... sort of.
the orange wire had been discoonected and the pin is now earthed. However, upon disconnecting the earth wire and connecting the original orange wire the pump still keeps running.
probably a dodgy wire is my guess.
