Default Sparking plugs.

Because of the Covid pandemic, my trusty series 2 has been held in captivity in Wales. We in England are now permitted to cross the border and I have rescued the car. It ran poorly but I did get it home some 50 or so miles. I had to keep the revs high and it was clearly running very rich. I cleaned the plugs and noticed it was running Champion N9YC. Now this engine if from a series 3. My service manual suggests that a vehicle in Europe should use Champion N10Y plugs set with a 35thou gap. These plugs seem to be in short supply. Does anyone have a recommendation on the equivalent plug? or, What is your experience? Alec G.

I run N9YC in my series 3 engine. No problem.

I have a copy of the Champion Spark Plug Guide, and it specifies N9YC for the Series 3 XJ6 injected, see screen grab:

The Bosch equivalent is W8DC

Many thanks for that. I am not certain of the engine year but it was fuel injected but I fitted the HIF7 carbs so it is a bit of a mongrel,

The N912YC specified for the carburated version of the engine is rated for hotter running than the N9YC. The Bosch equivalent to N912YC would be W9DC according to the pages later in the catalogue.

Try a gap of .025!!

Not sure that has anything with what may be an over fuel condition..

Really dirty air cleaner???

I suspect that the AED is not cutting out! I am told that the hot air pipe may not be doing its job. There is apparently a filter at the exhaust manifold end which is nigh impossible to get both nuts off to clean!
PS I have ordered a new set of plugs N9YC to copy what was/are currently in the engine. I could try others! I have also removed a not too clean air cleaner!
