Default stupid head light question

I've got a 1972 with the wiring that has been butchered. So I'm just going to start over and redo all the lighting. My question is, when the high beams are on, all four head lights should be on, correct?

Yes.

But remember that that the outboard lamps have two filaments...high and low.

When you select high beam A) the inboard lights will turn on B) the "low" filament of the outboard lamps will go out and C) the "high" element of the outboard lamps will turn on

Cheers

Does anyone happen to know the part number for the outer headlamps? I've been looking all over and can't find a 5.5 inch sealed beam headlight with dual beams. Plus the guys at the parts stores tell me there computers tell them it's just a high beam lamp on the outboard not high/low.

I figured as much. I've never had very good luck with parts guys. I picked up a Haynes manual and it clearly says the wattages for the outer headlamps are 37.5/50. I knew you guys were right.

I found it! I'm also a member of another jag forum, which I hope is OK with everyone here. I found a page on electrical and they had good info, http://www.jag-lovers.org/books/xj-s...ectrical2.html I even found a company online that had them on sale for under $8 a piece. One electrical problem down, one thousand to go. expect more questions as I go.

My UK Series 3, ( as per the Series 1 and 2 before it), had 7" outers with twin filament bulbs, and 5" inners single filament. Are the US cars different ? For my outers I installed quartz-halogen bulbs, but my the inners I found at an autojumble were all-glass sealed beam and no bulbs made by General Electric, I think.

The USA cars had the small lamps in all four positions, using sealed beams. It's popular to upgrade to the 7" outer lamps to get the right appearance. Most upgrade to Euro/halogen lamps at the same time
