Default Testing a coil

Forgive what me be a silly question, but I need to test the coil in my XJ6. I have a nifty inline spark tester that I use for the plugs. Can I just use it to test the coil as well?

Thanks!

Yes. No. Sorta. Those testers are great to determine spark vs. no spark. They don't tell anything about the quality of the spark, though.

If you can arrange it to fit into the coil socket and the coil wire, yeah, you can check the coil.

Another way to test a coil is with an ohm meter. A coil like yours shoudl have about 1.0 primary resistance (across the small terminals) and about 8k ohm secondary resistance (between the small terminals and the outpout socket, individually)

Do you have a "no spark" situation or something else?

Cheers

I don't seem to have any spark at the plugs, so I was going to move down to the coil. At this point I'm just checking to see if it has any spark at all...

Hi Doug:

It's been a while since your posting, but you seem to be the only guy with this info that I can find.

I have a 2001 VDP and can't seem to find the primary and secondary resistance levels for the ignition coils and cam sensor. I've look everywhere! Would you happen to have this information?

If you could help, it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Many thanks!

Dear Sir(jag)

Sorry, I don't have any specs for the V8 cars at all.

Good luck,
DD
