Toe-In Specs
I'm going to ask a very stupid question. I know the manufacturers specs for toe-in on my 1975 XJ6C is 1/16" - 1/8". Is that for EACH side or total for both, so 1/2 that for each side?
No, it's the total for both wheels. If you measured the distance between the wheels at the hub ( say either rim edge at 6 or 12 o clock of looking at the side of the wheel) and it's distance X. Then you measure the distance at the forward most edge of the rim (3 o clock), that distance will be X +1/16" to X+1/8".
Usually, you would use toe gauges and they always measure total toe, so there isn't any math to do. Sorry, I had misunderstood your first post, yes you would divide by 2 for each wheel, but there isn't a practical way to actually measure that.

For the car to run correctly, the rack must be centred. Then each side is adjusted separately to read 1/16th (or about 0.5°) toe in on each. Then the toe will be perfect and the car will run straight.
If your garage just measures total toe, and does not centre the rack and adjust each wheel separately, the car will not run true, as the self centring of the rack will be fighting the imbalanced forces from each wheel and steering arm acting on the rack; in other words, the total toe might be right but you will have to continuously steer the car straight, as each wheel is trying to do its own self centring thing.
