Default Transmission "CLUNK"

Car drives fine, but once warmed up, I get a clunk when shifting from neutral to drive or reverse. Where should I start?

U-joints.
Jack it up or get it on a lift and see how much slack is in each one.

Engine tick-over speed, (too high), can also cause a clunk when selecting a gear. Is this within the define revs for tickover ?

Also check your transmission mounts and spring....and the infamous cylindrical foam cushion.

Assuming a Series III 4.2 the set-up looks like this:



The rubber mounting blocks get oil-soaked and become weak and saggy. The CAC3227 foam cushion just.....falls apart.
