Default Transmission questions m65/66

After 2 years of sitting, I put in a replacement engine in the series 3. go to set off after new fluid and 1st reverse perfect 2nd.... nope. Massive jerking and reevs up and down. it will not do 2nd at all.
stuck it up on the lift to test, and same thing.
I adjusted the bands. no help at all.
Stuck some Lucas trans stuff in nothing.
Besides the one in the car i have three M66's and i was thinking of using one as a "lets see if u can rebuild it weekend"
I have had zero luck find any parts for these things, just the seals and gaskets. no bands or clutches anything else.

So. does anyone have links or places i can check out to get these parts. and what are the thoughts about the 2nd gear issue.

I overhauled my BW transmission last year using a kit supplied by SNG Barratt. I bought mine from the UK branch but they also have a US branch, as I’m sure you’ll know.

It was a “Special Order” item but the lead time was only about a week.

The part number is 65MOK and can be hard to find on the website (doesn’t appear if you have a filter for XJ6 S3 enabled!). Here is a link to the listing at the US branch:

I purchased a service manual on CD-ROM from ASTG and found a kit with the clutches online about seven years ago (unfortunately I don't recall the vendor's name).

Your issue sounds like it might be the governor - I had one stick on me: the car would stay in bottom gear until the box started to warm up. Cleaning the governor helped temporarily. Ended up replacing it with a good used one.

While you are looking for free, and because I got caught many years ago.

Feel around the back of the engine where the kickdown cable adjuster is, and make 100% sure the outer cable casing is seated into the adjuster hollow threaded thing.

Mine was sitting on the edge, and it took serious revs to get it to go to 2nd. Once there it drove OK.

Yours may have deeper issues with no drive, but worth a look.
