Default V6 & V12 Automatic Bell Housing Compadibility?

Just going to keep these questions rolling.

I'm wondering if the auto bell housing, is interchangeable, between the 2 motors & throughout all 3 generations & chassis options (Saloon, L-Door & Coupe)

V6? Only in a much later Taurus like sorta Jaguar. You probably mean I6, ie the XK engine.

If BW transmissions, possibly. If GM to BW, not likely.

However, a kit is available for some GM's to I6's. Johns cars in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Not to mention home grown or small shop grown adaptations of various boxes.
Usually manual.

The 6 cylinder XK engine has a different bolt pattern than the V12.

Then among the V12 engines.....and I'll admit that I'm a little fuzzy on this.....there were two bolt patterns, one for the BW trans and one of the TH400 trans introduced in mid-1977.

Or it might be that the bolt pattern was the same but the dowel locations were different. Something like that.

Among the 6 cylinder XK engines I think any of the four transmissions used ( BW8, BW12, BW65, BW66) will all bolt up to the block.

So, if nothing else, there isn't total interchangabilty but there might be some interchangabilty.

If you need more detail than that I'm sure we can get the concrete answers.

And, in case you didn't know, and in case you might need to know, the TH400 as used by Jaguar had a different case and bolt pattern than the TH400s used by GM in actual GM cars.

And the BW transmissions mentioned were used in many different cars, each (presumably) with its own bellhousing. So, if you have (let's say) a BW65 from a Volvo or BMW, it might not bolt up to a Jaguar block unless a Jaguar bell housing is used.

Cheers
DD

Sorry, inline-6, not V6.

Thanks for the replies folks!

Mod/ Admin: please change the topic title to clear up the V6/ inline-6 terminology, so users won't be confused.

So what was your outcome with the XJ6 gearbox?

Did you custom make an adapter plate?
