Default Wires..

Finally had a chap deliver a Series2 carb engine and take away the dead efi Series 3.
Lots of stuff to hook up, the little cable bundle near the front snapped nicely to the engine's cable bundle as did the green/purple cord along side it.
But .. I have four other wires )seem to come from the ignition coil area or coil itself) which have no homes,
they are red, black, purple, blue from memory... (might be another green, will check again)

series3 deadbeat come and series2 carb engine in

Changing from an EFI engine to a carb engine is going to leave you with quite a few electrical connections you no longer need, as the electronics have disappeared. Probably best not to be to concerned and just get your systems working one at a time. Then tidy up the unused stuff.

The S57 wiring diagram is a great guide to what you have in your S3 body. I had a quick troll through looking for that combination of colours in one place and the only likely areas where the EFI and speedo wiring (and black is everywhere for earthing).

Interesting mission you have.

There is a link to the s57 in the "How To" quick links that are at the top of this part of the forum

Damn, I think as usual I have made my post more confusing than needed to be.
As I do with life
Ok, so I started with an engineless 1974 s2 Jag and added a 85 EFI s3 engine with proved useless and so I extracted it and a going s2 Carb engine has now been put in place.
So, I have a s2 body with an period s2 carb engine and the wire issue is between the new engine and the body wiring which I assume should be mostly comparable.
I'll check out the links you point to.

Just curious as to why the S3 engine proved useless. Was it due to the absence of appropriate wiring for S3 electronics, or a different reason?

Is OK, I should noticed you signature line. I dont know if the S57 is much help with early cars. Hopefully one of the people with early model experience will chime in soon.

The S3 engine had compression issues but the wiring was also faulty linking to the ECU.

the bad

the good

so the green has a female or joint socket on end, the black a spade female and neither the blue or purple have connectors just bare wires.

You may have an insoluble issue??

So, do the ABC method. What electrical functions do you need.

ignition.
alternator
oil pressure
fuel pump
water temperature.
tachometer.
starter

Provide those and the car should run!!!

its more that the engine is new to the body and has just been sort of placed in my the guy i got it off and I'm trying to figure/check/doublechk the basic wiring before I try turning anything over. some of the basic obvious stuff is find but now and then I find something(s) on the engine that have wires headed no place and trying to figure where they should go.
