I have a Jaguar XJ12 ( Series 2 ) that is a rolling restauration. It has been standing for 20years but has now passed inspection and has made it a few miles.
However not it has stopped charging. When i meassured the voltage at one time the meater spiked to 18V. This leads me to think that maybe the volt regulator ( 14TR box ) is the problem? But where is it?
Lucas (Prince of Darkness) alternator has that item INSIDE, and a PITA to change.
I have always simply got a new alternator from whoever has them on sale at the time needed, and mostly a higher output in the bargain, and fitted it, and moved to the bar.
Went to rescue one recently, and after numerous phone calls of diagnosis, including "Is the alternator belt still intact and visible", with a resounding YES in reply,
I found the belt missing, words were said. New belt, on the road, and I charged him $300 for stupidity.
Just saying, sometimes its the simple things that we make sooooo complicated.
I upgraded my 1975 XJ6C 4.2L with an alternator from John's Cars Inc in Dallas, TX. Installation was a snap. I highly recommend it. He is VERY service oriented and a pleasure to work with.

Any pointers would be great.

In case you didn't catch it from the above posts, your regulator is integral with your alternator, so replacing the entire unit takes care of other potential alternator problems as well.
