Short question: What is the purpose of this small metal piece in back wheel arches? It was rusted away on my left side but right side is still good. But what is it needed for? Was many years since I disassembled the car and cannot remember what it was.

Its a structure support, needs treatment and paint. No need to be concerned with it other the fact the opposite side does need tending to

A multiplane gusset to enforce a n odd transition of shapes.

fabricate another. ASdd weld. paint for future protectin.

This little reinforcing piece is puzzling, as it doesn't look as if it serves any purpose at all. However, it is known that the XJ Coupe did have body rigidity issues so maybe this was a quick fix done by Jaguar body engineers. Jaguar engineers were certainly "spatchcock masters". They needed to be, because there was never any money for properly engineered fixes from the mid-70s onwards.

 

I had to look under all the Road Krud and undercoating but my car has these too.
