Question Xj6 4.2 1982 don't start, help

When turning the key the starter motor turns but the fuel pump and the injection do not start. The fuel pump has been checked and works and if it is powered directly by its relay the fuel reaches the injectors.

if the car has been sitting for a time, you might try to Prime the fuel system.

Place the Shifter in 1 or D.

Turn the key to Start and hold it there. Do you hear the Fuel Pump whirring ?

If yes, return the key to Off, and repeat turning and holding the key in the Start position with Shifter in 1 or D.

Do this 5 to 7 times, each time holding the key for about 6 or more seconds each time.

Then place the Shifter back in Park and crank to see if engine starts.

If still no start after Priming the fuel system per above steps, check the Inertia Fuel Cutoff Switch located at the Passenger Side, hidden behind the corner of the dash, above the Kick Panel.
It is a box with a wire connector at the bottom, and a Spring Button at the top.

Check the button by pressing down on it to see if it "clicks" back, in which case the switch had "tripped", preventing engine from starting.
If button does not click and just "springs" back, then the IFCS is ok.

if you are asking me about the Inertia Fuel Cutoff Switch check, it is a safety switch in case the car is rolled over, the inertia will "trip" the switch preventing fuel from reaching the engine to avoid a fire.
It's one more check to do.
The switch might trip without the car rolling over.
Same principle as an electric panel Breaker in a house which trips if an overload happens, shutting the electricity.
But I am not sure if this switch is part of a carburetted engine, I do know the fuel injected XJ have it.

Yes, it's on my carbureted 1975 Jaguar. And it's been known to just trip by itself. Just reach up and push the button back down and you're back on your way.

Thanks Bill for confirming that.
