Default XJ6 S3 4.2 litre distributor

Hello all,
I seem to recall reading somewhere that the distributor from a XJ40 can be substituted for the distributor in the 4.2 Litre XJ6 motor negating the need for the amplifier in the S3 as it is built into the XJ40 dissy (a bit like the Pertronix unit). Does anyone know if this is a thing or am I having a serious mental episode? This is just a query at this stage but would be good info to have for the future.

Not sure about the XJ40 distributor but you could use an E-type or early XJ distributor with a Pertronix unit installed.

Thanks Ken, Thats always an option. I have noticed that the drive in the XJ40 is different. It has a cogged drive where as the XJ6 seems to be a stepped type. So that would have to be changed over if this mod was to work. I guess for the definative answer I could always just call a distributor specialist. Not actually going to do this but I have noticed that a second hand XJ40 distributor here in Australia is much cheaper than it's XJ6 cousin and has the the amp built, in removing a few wires from the heat baked engine compartment.
