Default XJ6 Series 1 - Fuel tank - why not?

Dear fellowmen and women, - novise on this forum, happy to join and learn/share experiences.

Now - fuel tanks and water..., we've read and experienced all, water entering our fuel tanks, drain pipes clogged, o-rings dried out, rusty tanks, engine struggling etc etc.

So - I am thinking where does all this water actually enter the tanks?

I am no hydrologist or plumber -not even technically skilled, but it struck me that (least on my own 69 series 1 - see image) the top of the neck of the tank filler hole (A on image) appears to be positioned far too low - at (or even below) level of the wing (B) - it simply allows water "flowing" in...

Therefore - I'd be happy if it could be explained to me why the height of the the neck of tank the fill hole (still A) - is not higher - more elevated relative to the wing (B) - obviously because I think this would simply prevent water from "flowing" directly in.

Would a possible solution be to increase the height of the neck (A) at least 1, maybe 2 centimetres above level og B, and would this prevent (or minimize) the amount af water entering tank? (All the above remedies of drain pipies, O-ring etc etc in addition of course).

Happy to hear comments.

Something does not look correct.

is it possible that the rear wing was replaced with a Series 2 or Series 3 wing and the neck hole does not match the tank's neck?

Series 1 filler caps are much different than S3 caps. Have both photos somewhere... but the S3 necks are much longer and take different filler caps when S3 tanks are used..

@Jose - may be you re onto something. For sure something not all right. The wing is original (only one-owner car...), however the tank might have been replaced (series II tank?) - could that possibly explain "gap"?
@Roger - dont know, but guessing-if tank has been replaced-a serie III ank would not fit a series I-right?

Tank would fit fine, have them in my car, but you need the S3 caps. Check your tanks for a return line that is blocked off unless you have fuel injection.

I removed a cap off today and I looked at it, it looks identical to Norboy's car!! that is, the neck is below the sheetmetal, does not stick up over the hole.
