Default Xj6 series 3 exhaust

I am having a very hard time finding the inlet and outlet size of the mufflers. I am trying to order a couple universal mufflers but I don't know what size.

Assuming a 6 cylinder Series III....

The inlet end is 1.875" OD

The outlet end is a little tricky. The actual outlet nub is 1.75" OD but it almost immediately necks down slightly in diameter and curves upwards...with the bend leaving an less-then-round section of pipe that is a little difficult to measure. Ultimately it goes back to 1.875" OD at the rear of the car where the rear muffler fit

Cheers

the outside diameter of Series 3 XJ-6 exhaust pipes is 1 and 3/4 inches. Do you not have any exhaust parts that you can measure?

I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, you were talking about the forward mufflers.

If you want rear mufflers, this might be of interest

Thank you both for your help! I think I will pick up some of those glass packs for the rear mufflers. Do you have any suggestions on the front mufflers?

I got identical replacements for the two FRONT mufflers, (the ones located under the rear seat area), at Advance Auto Parts, but I had the old ones compare to.

I did get the two original British Leyland Silencers. (new-old-stock)

When you remove the existing rear mufflers don't cut off too much of the existing pipe or you won't have a good round surface to clamp the new muffler onto. It's another case where the pipe-to-muffler joint is perfectly round but the pipe curves and tapers just ahead of the joint....

Doug,
I have the receipt with part numbers, the issue is getting to it. I'll try to get it for you. Give me a few days.

Just had a thought, if I removed the front mufflers and just replaced with strait pipes would the sound and back pressure be ok assuming I leave the rear mufflers?

Nothing bad will happen. Slight increase in noise. It's a rather odd tone without the front mufflers.

No front mufflers and the glasspacks replacing the rear mufflers might be a bit louder and sound OK

cheers

Thrush Turbo/Universal muffler 17696- ReadReviews onThrush Turbo #17696

^^^^^^ This one is close and a good fit but with 2 inch ports. If your pipes are in good condition they can be cut off expanded a bit and welded inside the end of the new muffler.

I've done this...they offer a subtle but noticeable increase in sound over new OE units. The OE units are really heavy and packed thus their quietness.

Should be in stock at your local auto-zone or other big box auto parts store. Can also be ordered out of the catalog from just about any parts store.
