Default XJC Rear Side Windows -

First thing I'd like to do it thank Adam for his wonderful primer on this subject in his series called "Living with a Classic".
The next thing is to show my own experience which all started with restoring the Rear Parcel Shelf...in the process replacing the floor sections under the rear seat & repairing a partially jammed side window. The floor repair is covered in a separate thread.
With the seats out, to access the mechanism for lubrication or repair you remove the side panel. In addition to Adam's instructions, it involves removing the windlace. Be careful because today it seems only available in Black. Easier if you loosen or remove the kickplate. There may or may not be screws under the fabric holding the panel to the body at the front.

Remove the inner panel. The four screws you see to the right hold the actuator in place. #3 or #4 Phillips. DO NOT DROP THEM.

If you can, place the actuator arm in this position when removing the unit. This photo is actually the right side from Adam's video. Once you have removed the actuator, the wires are long enough to position it out of the way.

Once loose, slide the roller out of the rail. Wires are long enough to set the unit out of the way. You can then saturate the rails with WD40 or other penetrating oil & move the window up & down manually. I was lucky enough to have it finally free up. I wiped the rails & greased them. Now we'll talk about the spacer or shim.

The spacer was held in place during manufacturer by sticky putty. What I did was put the unit in place starting the two short screws on the right side, slipping the shim in place & using a #1 phillips or pick to align it. Then install the longer screws & secure.
Reassemble in reverse. BTW ...Good time to lubricate the seat belt retractors. I my case, the left side Seat belt was fabricated incorrrectly and the buckle is on the inside, not outside. I see no easy way to fix that.
I'm going to clean & dye the areas on both side panels before installing the seats.

Am going through that project right now. Been through it before but didn't address the proverbial rust issues with water getting past the window wiper blades. In my case, I'm going to remove the entire window and assembly to best get at the rust problem. I should have done that several years ago when I had it all apart. Any job is worth doing twice, I guess.

Rust in bottom of rear passenger window area. This is the top of the rocker panel.

Understand ! That is what I thought I was facing. Can you describe the process of removing the assembly ?

I would if I could remember. It will come to me as I'm disassembly mine. Seems to me there's a trick to getting it out and putting it back in. I'll update as I progress.

windlace is available in most colors from John Skinner Ltd. in UK. In the USA only black is stocked.
