I have the standard ECU in my car, but I have a 16cu one that I can fit or plug and play as I am told.

My Q is, what differences will this make to the car over the stock ECU in my 1983 V12?

Mainly, the 16cu is a lot more reliable than the 6cu. The 6cu had issues with cracking solder joints, leading to a myriad of issues.
When replacing a 6cu with a 16cu, make sure the specs on the vehicles they came from are the same, is, with or without O2 sensors, Lucas vs Marelli ignition, etc.

No idea what car it came from but I have a Lucas system.

I think I read that the O2 sensors don't matter, with or without.

I will give it a try tomorrow, weather permitting.

You being in Scotland, same spec cars as here.

My 85 6CU went female years ago.

Mate was fitting some aftermarket nightmare system to his 89 S3 V12. That car had O2 etc, and being a Series car Lucas Ignition.

I drove to his house, unplugged mine, plugged his in, and drove home with a hugely different performing XJS.

My ECU plug had NO wires in the ports for the O2 etc, so my very basic thinking at that time, and still the same, "nothing in, nothing to process, no issues".

If you had a later car with O2, then an O2 ECU would clearly be needed.

A small adjustment to the idle fuel "pot" on the side of that ECU was all it needed.

That was 1998, never touched the thing again.

 

I replaced the ecu this morning to the 16cu, the ecu in it had already been updated but not to 16cu spec, it was updated in 1999.

All I can say is.....OOOOOH MY GOODNESS!!! What a difference in performance. Tick over it better now, still slow to fire up, but I will sort that later.

Smoother on the road, it has taken a lack lustre engine and made it into a 5.3 V12.

This car is a fast as my Clio Cup now, before it felt like Granada 2.8 V6, seriously, what a difference.
