Default 1982 XJS HE... ignition coil(s)... help

Hello,

Putting together the V-12 HE... have many parts, and manual that 'helps' is an overstatement. Been told there are 2-coils for this car- I have one, compact, says Made in France on bottom and has bracket to mount to throttle- so pretty sure its right one. I have what I think is the 'second' coil that mounts front left...?? My manual has no photo or image to give me a referrence. and - the 2-wires off it are wrapped in heat shield, but I don't know where they go... Any chance someone could enlighten a confused new Jag owner? Or even a photo of similar car, coil placement... Been told there are no bad questions... especially with the V-12... I am sure I will have many more coming...;-) Thank you

The second coil is mounted in front of the radiator. If you open the hood you should be able to just see it from the left hand side of the car. Its in an awkward location.

Its entirely possible to do away with the second coil and fit one more powerful modern single coil in its place. That may be something you want to look into. I can't remember the exact specs needed for the single coil, but someone will know them.

The common coil replacement is the DAC6093

With the 6903 you can abandon the secondary coil entirely.

I think these were made for Jaguar by Ducellier. I'm not sure that Jaguar ever used these on the production line. I think they were offered only as a replacement part. But I can't swear to it.

The original round coil was a DAC2495 (primary) and DAC2693 (secondary). The 2495 was replaced by the 6903.

From memory the Lucas DLB170 replaces the 2495....and could replace the 2693 as well if you fill the HT socket with epoxy or some such.

Cheers
DD

The late Series III V12 used the single coil from the factory.

I think the requirement is a primary coil resistance around 0.5 Ohms. Back when the HE came out, such low resistance coils didn't exist so Jaguar put the two coils in parallel, thus lowering the effective resistance and gaining coil charging time. It was a clever application of electrical theory.
