1989 XJ-S Resto-Thread - or "my Iron Lady"

Well, apart from just putting the HT leads back in and fitting the AC compressor, it seems to be looking greater than ever now. Not really anthing much missing now... I think I only need to do the fuel injection setup (basically assemble, rail and co are all prepared), reassemble the cruise control unit, make a few little harnesses and fit the downpipes (will be taking the proper 2:1 Simply Performance ones) as well as exhaust manifold covers. Then the engine is ready to be fitted... Just wish the body was.
I'd keep it under blanket in my bedroom

Not yet. The bloke who was supposed to weld it over christmas has lost an arm... Not kidding. Crushed beyond healing capabilities after he managed to get it jammed in his car lift. No idea how but yeah... So I'm looking for a skills weder here, who can take on the complicated job of doing some standard welding to a high quality. I am really demanding. If my uncle was in the near, he'd have it done within a couple of hours.

Okay guys. Finally managed to get something finished again. So, the cruise control bellows are a kind of hate thing for many people. I want to keep them, so I overhauled 'em and am fitting them back into the V.
I had problems getting some plugs, as they are just typical US trailer wires, but not common here in Europe. So I went to import some from the States but then thought "Hey, why not use a Jaguar cruise control harness and adapt that" so I did. Worked out cheaper. €13/harness and was just a simple cut and correct. Easy peasy. Looks very new now!

This is annoying. Trying to get a sump with a drain plug and also deep for an acceptable price (meaning for like €200 incl. shipping) is like an impossible mission. I'm tempted to simply have someone weld a drain plug into mine.
I wanted the Jeggs cast alloy one (even if it may possibly be brittle) but they charge an arm and leg for P&P. Then other knock off from Taiwan are rubbish, as they are 'deep' but when the arrive they are about as deep as a tea cup saucer... Great!
Darn transmission!

It is a 6 cylinder. Well, it is technically two 6 cylinders. And to be honest: I wouldn't want an AJ6/AJ16 in the XJ-S. The car is all about the V12. Like getting Lamborghini SUV... No V10. No V12. Just an Audi V8.

So, I am greedy... I just bought a fuel rail incl. feed and return hoses for the V12. I already have a good'en. But I am thinking of having it nickelplated... My current one has been zinc plated (yellow to immitate the cadmium plating from 1989). Just I am not sure. It is such a present part. Chrome would look wrong. Nickel has a nice tint to it. Not as clear as chrome but also not as dark as copper... If I carry on buying parts, I can open my own spare parts store... 'Damien's pretty perfect plated parts'

This ain't dead yet! Still moving on. Just in slower steps than I thought after my XJ8 died and required a very quick replacement, lots to do at work, a replacement for the XJ that was a pain in the bum and then a new car which is so fun to drive, I don't like doing anything else other than driving that!
So, today marked the near completion of the top of the engine (as far as possible). The new AC hoses are on. The air filter boxes are on. Basically only needs the fuel injector rail and the wires and it is ready to start - if only my car didn't need a bit of body work done in the engine bay prior to installing it...
