1989 XJS emergency parking brake handle
Please if any one can help
I have a 1989 JaguarXJS. I disassembled emergency hand brake stick inside the cab and cannot put it back together specially the external spring gives me a headache as where it goes. can anyone help me with pictures and details for reassembly?

My brake on my 90 XJS is also non-working but mine goes up and down freely and the dash lights for the brake are on all the time. So I hope to use this post and guessing something is broken or has cone apart. Really hoping its an easy fix if there is such a thing on a Jag!

It dies sound like the lever is on, as normal, and has not been released. Remember, it's a pseudo fly-off arrangement, so the lever always sits at the bottom, even when the brake is on.

I don't have an owners manual. At this point all I know is the BRAKE light is on the dash full time but it's not engaged (at least it doesn't seem to be as it drives) and the lever just goes up and down freely with no resistance.
It's a "Fly-Off" arrangement. Try this first: Pull up on the handle until you feel resistance. Then, pulling up with just a touch more pressure, press the button. Holding the button, lower it. That's how it's designed to work.
As far as not being engaged, it could be several things, but driving it with the brake on has not helped at all.

IME, driving with the handbrake (partially) engaged on the XJ-S is quite possible. At best, you'll just have worn the pads a bit. At worst, on those pre-facelift versions with inboard brakes, if you've been driving it with the handbrake fully engaged, it can just rip the pads out. Let's hope that hasn't happened.
Start by disengaging it properly, as described above. The light should then go out. Then start examining the handbrake pads to see if they are intact. Then you'll work out if you have a problem. Maybe, get hold of the proper drivers handbook, so you understand the controls and operation.
Good luck

Well, I fiddled a bit and found out the parking brake seems to work fine. I didn't realize there are 2 brake lights on the dash, 1 says "BRAKE" and the other says "PARK BRAKE". The light always on is the BRAKE light so gotta figure out what that means now. Thanks for the help for this Jag newbie!!!
That is the low brake fluid warning light. It might mean low fluid or it might mean the float is not floating, or something else not working on the ABS if you have it.

codoug,
There are 3 brake lights on your car.
One is the handbrake light - Red
One is the brake fluid / ABS pressure light - Red
One is the ABS light - Yellow
Your red light means you've got a brake fluid level indication problem or an ABS pressure problem.
Your car has the very complex Teves II system. So let's hope it's just a fluid level problem! First thing for you to check.
Don't even start playing with the system, particularly brake bleeding or even changing pads until you've read up on it. If you search ABS or Teves on this forum, you'll start to understand the complexities and challenges of the system.
Don't bother replying back on Mala123k's handbrake thread. I would start a new thread on any discussion you wish to have on the brake light problem.
