Default 1990 XJS door window problem

Passenger side window stops about half way before meeting the soft top with a "clank". If helped by hand it gets to the top. No problem when it slides down. Motor with arm tested separately run fine up and down. The window alone manually slides easily up and down. Any experience or suggestion?

I’ve just had mine apart, which was doing the same thing.

What I found was when the motor was disconnected the glass moved in the frame easily and the motor and mechanism worked as it should, but if I clamped the motor and mechanism in a vice and ran it applying some resistance it would stop. I then removed the cover on the motor that coves the worm and ring gear, and found that the worm gear was worn , and with a little resistancewould climb the ring gear and the unit would stop. If you pushed or pulled thearm (or window) back in the direction it just came from it would continue tooperate for another couple inches.

I replaced the motor with a junkyard find and all is goodnow.

Just my experience.

Default 1990 XJS door window problem

Thank you Gunner01
I feel I have the same probem.
I've checked the price for a new original motor: here in Europe is sold at 600€( ab. US$900). No second hand on sale so far.
Where did you look for your replacement?
Thanks a lot.

If it's a front window motor, those can be found on eBay - not always, but it's possible. The rear ones don't seem to exist - I've been searching since April.

I found, and used a motor (just the motor) at a local auto recyclers. I removed it from the passenger side, (they get less use) of a late 80s XJ6.

Paid $40.....score

Hi Gunner1, do you know which model and year the motor you found belongs to? This may help me on my, as today unsuccessful, search on ebay. Thank you.

The car I got the motor from was a 1987 Sovereign
It was the right front motor that I used to replace my left drivers door window motor.
