I recently solved my speedo issue, had to replace the speed sensor on the tranny. But mine had the classic symptoms, either it would sit on zero, or jump all over the place.
It's a pretty much "plug and play" repair, take the old sensor out and put in the new one. There is no adjustment or calibration needed. Not sure what he could have done to make it act that way.
Of course, maybe the one he put in is bad and failing in a different mode. It's fairly easy to replace, you can certainly do it yourself if you have jacks/ramps to elevate the car a bit.
Thanks,
John
