Default 1996 Front frame mounts

I had been hearing front end and rear end noises every time I pull the car into the garage. I am thinking either shock, ball joint, tie rods steering or ??.

While under the car the other day to change the oil and trans filter/fluid, did a little inspection. Moved front wheels and didn't get any noises/movement out of the ball joints. Everything seemed to be intact with no movement.

I did notice that the frame mount on the front passenger side looked crushed as versus how the one (1) on the drivers side appeared to be intact.

I also felt a hard hit to the rear of the vehicle while pulling into the gas station.

Sounded like body and frame banging together.

Have not felt any real problems while driving....feels smooth

I guess to sum up..... has anyone accomplished changing out the Front and Rear body mounts.

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks

On this diagram, which mounting points are you posting about? 2 or 10 ?

I had a front end noise at certain driving conditions. It turned out to be the upper shock bushings. I replaced both front shocks with KYB and no more noise. However while I was looking at everything I decided to go ahead and replace all the bushings. I am now stock piling all the bushings and ball joints for the front including the sub-frame and rack mounts. I then thought while I was in there I would go ahead and replace the rotors and pads as well...where does it end???

My guess , body too rear frame mounts .Not easy to tell by just looking jack the rear up and see if it hangs , may be slight ,put pry lever between , that should show whether or not it has come apart from the rubber. Next shock absorber bushes .

Greg,

Based on the drawing it looks to be #2.

Thanks

Ok, to change the rear front set of front subframe mounts, you have to raise the car, or at least the front, then:
  1. Raise the car, or at least the front
  2. Support the engine across the top using a support beam standing in the gutters each side of the engine bay attached to the front lifting eyes
  3. Then undo the front engine mounts at their topside, that is the bit that is attached to the bracket bolted to the engine (hard to get at but doable), needs a very short ring spanner
  4. Undo the shock absorbers, either at the top or at the bottom
  5. Loosen the huge bolt that goes through the front two subframe mounts
  6. Then support the subframe under the centre with a jack
  7. Then undo the steering column from the rack tower
  8. Then undo the nut that holds the rear mounts to the subframe
  9. Then CAREFULLY lower the jack a bit and if necessary pry down the frame at the rear, about 2 inches should do it. Be sure to not stress the front brake flexible lines by dropping the subframe too far, if necessary you will have to undo these, but I do not think it is.
  10. Then you can undo the two fixings that hold the rear subframe mounts to the lower chassis rail, the subframe itself masks one of them until lowered.
  11. Bolt on the replacements and jack the subframe back up and do up all the things you undid.
I think this is all that is needed to do the job.

Remove rear wheel you will see 2 mounts . Easy to replace , did one way back , undo bolts (really) slide out broken mount , reverse for replacement . From memory this was a simple / straight forward job , I usually remember the PIA jobs. Would still check out the easy stuff first shock mounts.

Don't forget the steering rack bushings, the originals suck. Most of us have gone polyurathane or the less reliable 3 peice rubber sets. Amazing difference in steering stability. makes em drive like new again.
And I don't care if someone told ¥ø¨they were recently redone with jag parts. The geometry and engineering design makes it impossible for even new jag replacements to work properly .

also, don't forget to check to the rear suspension cage mounts. if ¥ø¨*remove a rear wheel you'll see †∑¨*strange looking mounting brackets connecting the suspension cage to the frame. They are notorious for the rubber separating and giving the rear end a kind of "hula-hoop" feeling on turns, s†øπs, starts ,etc. Let me know if I can help more in the future and ENJOY YOUR JAG. there's truley nothing else like an XJS!

I know where you're coming from. I said I'd just clean the engine up and good. Now I've got it out and will probably end up taking it to pieces... The tranny too. And the front subframe. And soon the rear subframe.
