Default 1996 XJS 4.0 mileage

After a tank or two of high test gasoline I think my 1996 XJS is getting about 15mpg city and 20mpg highway. Is this about right for this 4,000 lb car? I owned a '67 Lincoln that only got 8 city and 12 highway. It weighed 5200 lbs though. Not complaining. This is a very good handling and good riding vehicle. Not to mention it's beauty. I am in love!

Those numbers sound about right. If you do all highway miles with a steady, light foot, you can probably average somewhere closer to 24mpg.

I have a '95 AJ16 (same car) and I would agree with your mileage numbers. On the highway, if you keep engine revs at or slightly below 2K RPM (about 70 mph) and use cruise control you should get 22-24 mpg.
