1996 XJS Transmission Mount Movement?
Does anyone know what should be the limits of the movement of the tail shaft of the transmission allowed by the tranny mount on a '96 4.0L Convertible?
Based on the design it looks like some movement is intended and I'm assuming somewhere there is a spec that says X amount of up/down or left/right movement is allowed but beyond that you need a new tranny mount (or to tighten something) but I can't find any reference anywhere.
Someone said if it clunks the bottom of the car when you go over bumps it's bad and while that's definitely good advice as a sign of a bad one I actually doubt it should have even near that much allowed movement so need to know how much is considered "normal" ... ?

sorry to say there is no reference like that.
the mounting has a spring and that works as a shock absorber. the bushing works as a bump stop, so when the bushing goes bad it starts to making a clunk sound.
it won't be a problem if it moves as far as the spring travels.
