What exactly do you mean by "GM pos special"?
The Buick 3800 is on Wards list of the 10 best engines of the 20th Century. It had a 47 year run and even dominated Indy car racing in turbo form until it was banned. At this point it may be dated but certainly not a POS.

the 3800 and 4.3 V6 are related but because so many yrs running manufacture , early ones had there minor problems, but the last of the breed are very good engines.
the last one i worked on(complete overhaul),4.3L engine did not need overhaul but customer said do it anyway, 1991 GMC van , 350K and cylinder hone marks still visible .
it had a great plastic tuned runner inlet manifold, with 6 aimed port injectors, well shaped exhaust manifolds!
the famous GM Vortec swirl ports, very nice wedge chamber shapes.
block, steel crank, forged con rods, updated moly piston rings, roller lifter cam , and best was a balance shaft for super smooth idle and rev range, much improved ECU and other changes!
i have seen some with over 400K miles on them, still running fine.

The Buick 3800 and Chevy 4.3 are not related in any way other than the fact that they are both 90's degree V6's derived from other GM v8's which also have no relation.
They share no major parts and have some very distinct differences. Most notably the Buick is a full skirt block or put another way the block sides extend past the main bearings, the chevy block has no skirts and is weaker. The Buick also has evenly spaced exhaust ports. The Chevy has 2 of the 3 exhaust ports right next to each other. These are the 2 main reasons why it was the hotrodder's choice to turbo charge before the LS turbo charging became popular.

my bad ,sorry. odd you dont see many 3800 in performance cars!
i was remembering the last of the 4.3L V6 engines.
as i do remember the 3.8L Buick, had the oil pump on the timing cover, and they had problems, like reenforced plate .
i'm speaking the Buick GN 1986, in my profile, blew up 2 turbo V6s engines ,then put an LS in ,NO more problems 4L80E trans , bullet proof.
