Default 2 questions-where to put the jack to raise

a 1992 xjs convertible-I need to raise this as high as I can in my garage and second-is the master cylinder res. on top of the master- it is a good size it does have abs system on it. Oh one more question how does the brakes get power-is it thru vacuum or power steering?

Thanks
Mark

Mark, I use this site Anti Lock Braking System Modulator - Parts For XJS from (V)179737 to (V)226645 | Jaguar Classic Parts UK for diagrams and to locate part numbers.

Yes your car has ABS. Follow the brake fluid pipe from the reservoir (which is big plastic tank mounted directly above the master cylinder) across to the right side of the firewall where it connects to the ABS module. Your brakes are powered by vacuum (brake booster, see diagram) and not connected to power steering. But there's also a pump (modulator) on the ABS.

I'm thinking you have a vacuum or booster problem giving you no assistance when you step on the pedal. Shouldn't have to raise the car for this job. And frankly I couldn't tell you how to raise the car other than by using the normal jacking points.

Check out this thread on another forum for ideas about testing the boost: brake problem, VERY hard brake pedal but VERY little braking power - Car Forums and Automotive Chat

Concerning the jacking points: Depending upon what you want to do, it is best to raise front of the car by jacking under the front suspension spring pan each side. The rear is best jacked either centrally (needs a long trolley jack) under the tie plate in the centre of the rear axle cage; or each side under the radius arm bush where it attaches to the car.

In my experience the jacking points are not always a very solid part to use for the jacks! Once in the air you can place axle stands as needed. I expect you already know, but just in case not, never work under a car held up by a jack only.

About 15 years ago my Dad had a 63 Corvette he built a ramp in garage out of 2x12's length of car and 20" high also built up 24" wide each side of engine compartment to work on engine left them in place every time pulled into garage drove up on ramps. He also had 4- 20 ton bottle jacks to lift wheels completely above ramp. I intend to do same for the jag.
