Default 84 HE - ECU Vacuum Line

Greetings

what route does the Vac line from the inlet manifold balance pipe to the ECU in the boot take....?

Want to change this and a few other lines and while i have the tank out...!

What is the easiest way to install the new line....can i some how connect it to the old one and pull it through....?

Thanks

Darren

Darren

The vac signal tube goes from the centre of the balance pipe using a thick walled flexible (about 10 inches long from memory) which then joins to a solid steel pipe that runs down the transmission tunnel RHS and into the boot on the RHS front corner just a couple of inches away from where the fuel tank-to-engine feed pipe exits the boot (this runs down the RHS floor pan next to the brake line).

If you are thinking of removing the vac pipe, rather than just abandoning it in place) be CAREFUL because the main battery feed cable also runs down the tunnel mainly on the LHS, and the two items look VERY similar! To remove it requires the gearbox to be removed first!

The only way you can see all of this is to remove the heat shields - itself requiring disconnecting the exhaust/downpipe join.

Out of interest, why are you considering replacing the vac line?

Greg

Agreed.

I reckon a lot of people believe the vac line TO the ECU is flex/rubber ALL the way. Then we all discuss the renewing of the British Non-Metallic items on a regular basis.

The vac hose of that line inside the boot and especially AT the ECU spigot is possibly the weakest area. It splits regularly.

The build up of oily mist inside that length of pipe/hose is common, and a regular clean out is a good idea in my opinion, unplugged from the ECU obviously.

gentlemen,

thanks for the input, i did think the line was flex vac tube all the way through, with the tank out i was going to change it while i had the opportunity.....the line is not blocked as i have blown air through from the ECU end...but now i understand the construction of the line i will replace the flex / rubber sections only...will know its done and that will be that....ruling out any potential for vac leaks etc. As an avid reader of this forum it has been mentioned in a few threads to check the condition of the line from the balance pipe to the ECU.

All good and thanks again for the assistance

regards

Darren
